Abstract: “Layla” is a short narrative film that centers around a young twenty-one-year-old girl who suffers from memory loss and depression. In an attempt to escape from the pain of losing her brother at a young age, she tries to take her own life. This film was created to entertain, becoming a possible escape from a negative reality that those dealing with mental health may deal with. This film is designed to create a sense of hope for those who may have lost it. To reach this goal, a post-modern film style was put into action including film techniques from the French New Wave era. This film was shot with a five man crew. This film was promoted by film posters that were distributed throughout major buildings on campus as well as social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram. The assessment of this film consisted of the following: a campus-wide screening and YouTube. The film was posted to YouTube following the screening on April 7, 2018. The screenings were accompanied by a questionnaire link sent to the attendants’ mobile devices. The results reveal that the film left the viewers feeling hopeful, with a final takeaway that the film would be recommended to a friend who may struggle with their mental health.
